Reviews
"Film purists who scoff at digital photography dismiss Howlett's work at their peril. Rarely have I seen such vital, organic, and, yes, romantic, visions wrested from a medium overrun by pedestrian amateurs." - EWI, Chattanooga, USA
"I was introduced to ians work several years ago and have enjoyed following his journey since then. Looking at his work over the years I have been constantly impressed by not only the quality and his technical ability but his ability to show a photography in 2d that comes alive and gives me a sense of being in the actual photograph. A true professional." - SM Photography, Scotland
"Ian's work is vibrant and characterised by outstanding professionalism and incredible talent. Years of experience and passion for what he does make you 'travel' through his photos. Exceptional photographer." - AP, Athens, Greece
"Ian Howlett's work captures the beauty and absurdity of life, in ways that make the most familiar situations seem brand new. He finds the poetry in the mundane and the ordinary in the sublime, presenting the world as if we were seeing it for the first time." - Graymalkin designs, LLC Ohio USA
"Each of Ian Howlett's images tells a story, the kind that lingers in the mind for ages. There are photos in his portfolio that stop you in your tracks and demand your full attention, as if it had been waiting just for you to view it. To evoke that kind of personal connection with an image speaks of Ian's talent and vision." - Stephen Herron, Writer, USA
"Making compliments on Ian's work would be kind of stupid , in a way ... All his images are doing it far better than any words would... Looking at his pictures will make you see how skilled he is, how he really masters all techniques... and reach absolute perfection." - Scáth Davoine, Photographer, Paris
"Ian is a consummate artist who understands the importance of skill and pride in craftsmanship. The result is always a product with emotive context and impact supported by technical excellence. His years of experience in the printing industry are an added bonus. Understanding print, typography and all the ancillary considerations involved, has been a boon for us in producing and designing titles and [book] covers. With Ian you don't just get stunning photography, unless that is all you need. For every photograph is stunning!" - S.G., Avalon Press Ltd.
"Ian Howlett is a naturally gifted photographer who has been almost compulsively honing his talent for 30 odd years. The result of this nexus of innate ability and a lifetime's worth if experience is a body of work full of genuinely sublime images that are appreciated by both fellow photographers and non photographers alike. Whilst photographers will praise his treatment of tone, his understanding of light, his all seeing eye, his preternatural ability to frame a shot perfectly, and non photographers will speak more vaguely about beauty, we all are really talking about the same qualities. There is a 'rightness' in Ian's best work, a high wire balancing act of timing, eye, talent and a lifetimes skill that makes each individual image speak to the viewer intimately. In this digital, postmodern world, where we are bombarded with images and where almost everyone seems to be a photographer, or at least claims to be, Ian is indisputably the genuine article, a master of his craft, a quiet visionary and a true artist"
Peter Clarke, photographer. Northern Ireland
"For me, the whole of art comes down to just 2 factors: light and the conveyance of the human experience. As a Poet, these are fairly easy to achieve if you are a skilled craftsman, but as a photographer, I know that these are very difficult to attain, even if you are a student of the craft. For photographs to rise to this level, the artist must rely on something beyond the workmanship; something not apparent or easily described, let alone learned:
something only they see;
only they know.
Ian Howlett is such an artist.
Beyond his technical expertise, his perfection of light and composition, Ian conveys powerful emotion and the human experience in a way that makes those of us fortunate enough to see his art grateful for the opportunity."
Larry Kuechlin, Poet,Author, California USA.
